Chapter 5
”Collette!” Eileen screamed and ripped herself from Emma’s grip, even though Emma did her best to restrain the woman. She rushed into the crime scene.
“Eileen! Stop!” Colby yelled as Eileen turned and went toward the bedroom on the right hand side of the sitting area. Emma gingerly stepped around the blood on the carpet and rushed after the woman.
“Collette!” Eileen yelled again and rushed into the bedroom. Heading toward the half-open closet where a foot stuck out and ripping it open. A pile of clothes and towels were in a pile on the closet floor. Eileen tore those aside and exposed a tied up and gagged woman.
“Stop!” Colby yelled again. “Don’t touch anything!”
With a sob, Eileen tore off the tape that gagged her sister's mouth and shook her. “Collette, wake up. You have to wake up!”
Emma rushed forward and grabbed Eileen by the shoulders, while shooting an apologetic glance toward Colby. “Eileen, come with me. You can't touch anything. It's a crime scene.”
“She won't wake up,” Eileen whispered, tears streaming down her face. “Is she... is she...”
Colby bent over the body and felt for a pulse at the woman's neck. When he met eyes with Emma, he shook his head. Then he continued to speak softly into his phone.
Emma pulled Eileen into a hug and then noticed that both the server and the manager had also followed Emma and Eileen into the suite. “Everything is going to be okay. Let's get back, everyone. This is a police crime scene. We are contaminating it. Don't touch anything and step back out into the hallway.”
Once everyone had done what Emma had said, she asked the two hotel employees. “Did you touch anything?”
They both stood wide-eyed, shaking their heads. The manager leaned toward Emma. “Did you see the gentleman on the other side of the couch? Is he dead, too?”
Frowning, Emma shook her head. She hadn't seen the body on the other side of the couch. She'd been chasing after Eileen with her focus upon the woman and keeping herself from touching anything that might be a clue. When Colby had phoned in the incident and the body, he'd been looking just past the couch. But Eileen didn't even look that direction. How did she know that the body wasn't her sister's? How did she know to turn into the bedroom?
Eileen continued to sob on her shoulder, completely distraught. Emma met eyes with the manager over Eileen's shoulder. “Is there any chance that we could get a few chairs for here in the hallway. Even though we can't go in the apartment, each of us is going to need to stay nearby for questioning.”
The manager flinched. “Even me? I wasn't even up here until the officer called me up. I only came with the key because he ordered me to.”
Emma nodded. “Even if that's all that you have to say or all that you witnessed, the detective is going to need to hear that directly from you. Also he may have questions
